Chapter Nineteen
Becca stared bleakly at the rest home from her car window. She suspected that she knew why Shelly had sent her here instead of letting her stay with Erin. She hadnât thought her doubts and fears had been that obvious, but clearly Shelly had seen something. Or maybe she thought that Lizzie and the other deputies were watching her and the house. Or maybe Shelly wasnât sure about what Erin had been up to, either. The possibilities were endless.
As if on queue, a Sheriffâs Department car drove by on the next street, a deputy that she didnât recognize behind the wheel. So Shelly probably had an excellent point, regardless of her motivation. True, he didnât glance toward her parked car, but that could just mean that they had orders not to make it too obvious. Thatâs how they would be playing it if this were a TV show. Lizzie would think of that if Henderson didnât. Becca grimaced at her reflection in the window. Life had all been so much simpler a week ago.
Some of the women from Circle House started gathering in the side garden, and she recognized Sharon at the same time that the older woman spotted her and waved. No putting this off any longer then. Becca got out of the car and walked up the side path. But before she could walk over to the group, Sharon jerked her head toward the front of the building. Becca scowled in puzzlement, but directed her steps back toward the front door as if it was what she intended all along.
Lizzie Blackhawk swung the door open as she got there. âMiz Thornton.â She nodded stiffly, as if Becca was a near stranger who sheâd seen around town a few times, then stepped outside, letting the door close behind her. She stood on the step next to Becca, eyeing her over her mirrored shades. âGot any news for me?â
Becca ran through a quick list of responses in her head, dismissing the more confrontational ones. âLooks like Annieâs back,â she volunteered, settling on the thing that Shelly had almost certainly told her cousin. âAnd can we just switch to you calling me Becca? You know I didnât kill Leroy and Iâm not hiding Erin.â Much. She made herself smile as she swallowed that particular lie. Fib, not an out-and-out lie. After all, she wasnât sure where Erin was right now.
Lizzie narrowed her eyes like she could read Beccaâs mind. âWell now, that would mean telling me about the burglary at your place and whatever else has been going on, now wouldnât it? George Sanchez says that you chased off a burglar, but that information somehow failed to get reported. This isnât a game for me, you know. Iâve got a murder victim, a missing suspect, a jail with compromised security and now, a burglary. Did they take anything?â
Becca hung her head and scuffed the edge of her shoe against the step. Stop acting like a teenager, her inner adult demanded. âJust some old clothes, I think.
